Black Girls MIX It Up?

MIX at the Cleveland Museum of Art takes place every first Friday of the month from 6pm-10pm. It’s an evening filled with culture, music, drinks, and dancing.  Last Friday was my first time attending and let me tell you why I was blown away.

1. Inexpensive

You might think that an event at the art museum would empty your pockets but it’s actually the opposite. Tickets are only $10 in advance and $15 at the door. If you can’t find free street parking then parking is $10 in the garage. If you are a member of CMA, MIX is free and parking in the garage is $5 for you. Mixed drinks were $9 but there were also $5 drink specials available too. So you can bring your friends, meet your coworkers, go on a date and have a great time without breaking the bank.

2. Culturally Themed

The MIX event that I attended was themed POWER. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect because I didn’t do my homework to see what it was about. But, I was pleasantly pleased when I realized the theme was African. There were two traditional dance performances that evening and a tour ending in the African Art Gallery.

While I watched the performance, Shana took the tour. The tour guide pointed out certain artifacts that were associated with power in religion and in Africa. Who knew that we both were going to have Wakanda-like experiences in our own backyard! The beauty of this event is that you can experience different cultures almost all year round at the MIX events.

3. Networking

MIX is a mixture of the many things that you’ll experience but I can say that part of the experience is meeting new people. This is the perfect place to introduce yourself or be introduced by someone else. It’s also a place where you will probably run into someone that you know so the possibilities for networking are endless.

There are also arts and crafts tables where you can hone in on your talents or admire others. It’s a creative space that was made for you to mix it up!

4. DANCE

I don’t know about you, but good music is essential at any event. The space in the atrium is one of my favorite places to be because of the natural sunlight that comes thru from the high ceilings. The music vibrating thru the atrium while everyone mixed and mingled was the perfect atmosphere for me.

Throughout the evening as it began to get dark, the atrium transformed into a nightclub where DJ Mark Matthews gave us life with the House music mix. I had such a great time dancing it out with my friends. It was the perfect ending to the night. If you love music as much as I do, then you definitely need to experience the MIX.

The MIX won’t be back until the first week in October. Now that I’ve had this experience, I can’t wait to go back. You can always check out the Cleveland Museum of Art’s website for more information about their upcoming special events and exhibits.

Next up, Solstice!
