A Thank You Note: Cigars 101

by Shana Black

This year’s event Cigars 101 at Shaker Cigar was such a great experience. Even as I'm writing this I became thankful for last week's cold weather that caused us to have to reschedule.

Due to the Polar Vortex with highs of -1 before windchill, we made the decision to reschedule

So instead of a January event, we were able to bring out Black women and MEN to support 2 local Black-owned businesses, Black Girl and Shaker Cigar, during Black History Month.

As everyone sat around the table and talked we found out that there were other Black business owners in the group. Most of the people arrived solo and said they decided to push themselves to come without friends because they were interested in trying something new. Most said that they came because they were looking forward to socializing and being in a laid back atmosphere around other Black women. Pretty cool huh?

Jason and Phillip, from Shaker Cigar, went above and beyond our expectations as host and surprised each of our guests a small gift.  I watched as a table full of strangers left as friends, exchanging numbers and business cards, trying to plan a time to reconnect and leaving with hugs. One guest said, "I feel like I've been sitting around with old friends."  It was in that moment I realized the power of togetherness."

Thanks to all who came out. Thank you for reminding me why our work here at Black Girl in the CLE is so important and thanks to everyone for all you do to support Black Girl in the CLE.

I hope to see all of you at an upcoming event real soon.
