Black Girls Jump Back to the Roaring 20s?
I went to my first Jump Back Ball February 25, 2017 and what phenomenal time I had! Although I heard about how much fun this annual event was, I didn’t know what to expect. The idea of the ball fascinated me because I’d been looking for something new, fresh, and different to do in CLE. I’ve been wanting to experience a change of location and that night I got what I wished for.
The 26th Annual Jump Back Ball, presented by Playhouse Square Partners, the young professionals group of Cleveland's Playhouse Square, was a sold out event. (Learn more about Playhouse Square Partners)
Each year, party goers dress up according to a theme. This year’s theme was the Roaring 20s and I couldn’t wait to time warp to the past. I was torn between dressing up as wise guy in a pinstripe suit or a dame swanky enough to attend a party at The Great Gatsby’s.
The night had finally arrived and I was all set to jump back to the 20s in my flapper girl attire. I admit the thought of stepping out in my full costume scared me a little. I wondered if others attending the ball would be dressed in a less dramatic style.
To my surprise, I was blown away by party goers walking down Euclid Avenue under the large chandelier and the Playhouse Square Arches and looking as though they were the featured stars of a 1920s film.
Once in the State Theater, ushers kindly directed guests toward the stage through the beautifully decorated lobby, where one band played.
“It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing.”
The Jump Back Ball had swing and everything in between - lights, cameras, burlesque and swing dancers doing the Charleston dance. Costumes and period decor enchanted guests with the feel of a speak easy.
The aroma of a full course meal grew stronger approaching the State Theater stage.
Three live bands played tunes of every decade from the 20s to the 2000s entertaining nearly 1000 party goers.
Other attractions included a full casino where poker-faced party goers tried their luck at Roulette and Black Jack, a silent auction, dancers, a wine pull and plenty of photo ops.
“Stick With Us You’ll Have A Ball”
The 26th Annual Jump Back Ball was an evening to remember and in my opinion, was one of the most mature, posh, and lively events in CLE. Party goers to feel as if they’re part of a cast in an engaging stage play! I experienced the transformation myself and witnessed it in other party goers.
I met new folks and had laughs with old friends, and danced the night way for a charitable cause. If you haven’t ever attended, I recommend that you do. You’ll have a ball at this eclectic event where you’re given a rare occasion to party in the largest performing arts center in the county outside of New York City.
Until next year ol’ chums!
