As someone who has made Cleveland her home, this city holds a special place in my heart. Even so, I haven’t always taken advantage of what it has to offer. But a few years back, frustrated that I was unable to travel at the time, I made the conscious decision to see Cleveland in a new light. Just because it was all in my backyard didn’t make it any less captivating. Since then, I have collected a number of favorite experiences around the city. So if you find yourself with 72 hours in The CLE, definitely make sure to add some of the following to your itinerary.
Where to Eat:
AsiaTown
For a fun and authentic experience, make time for AsiaTown. Some of my favorite restaurants are in this culturally rich neighborhood of Cleveland. Try Li Wah’s Dim Sum, the “brunch of the Far East” according to their website. Make sure you go for lunch and finish up with dessert and bubble tea at Koko Bakery.
Mt Pleasant Bar-B-Q
You must stop here to pick up some authentic (and Black-Owned) Cleveland BBQ! I grew up with my dad eating Shoulder Sandwich dinners, BBQ wings, and my all time favorite—Polish Boys. Polish Boys are a Cleveland creation and staple. If you’ve never experienced one, but you like polish sausage, BBQ sauce, french fries, and coleslaw, what are you waiting for?!
Mason’s Creamery
Mason’s Creamery is my favorite place to get ice cream in Cleveland. But what gets me most is that each year during the winter months, Mason’s Creamery transitions into a Ramen shop! Yes, authentic, amazing, yummy Ramen. So no matter what time of year you’re visiting, make sure you give them a visit.
Rincon Criollo, Gordon Square
A friend introduced me to Rincon when she moved into the Gordon Square neighborhood and I have been thankful ever since. I don’t think I had ever eaten Puerto Rican food before experiencing Rincon, but I was immediately comforted by the familiarity it brought. This isn’t the fanciest dinner spot, but the food does all the talking.
Cleveland Tea Revival
I’m not a real coffee drinker, so I’m always looking for a great tea shop. I have more than found that in Cleveland Tea Revival. I suggest you stop here for a lavender matcha or rose latte. But if those aren’t for you, they have an extensive list of loose leaf teas. Finally, pair your tea with your choice of an assortment of sandwiches and desserts.
What to Do:
Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA)
Before COVID, I spent every first Friday at CMA’s event MIX. This was a themed dance party over cocktails and live music or a DJ. Such a great time! Regardless, CMA of course has a lot more to offer. This free museum has so many interesting pieces of art—it’s internationally known for its Asian and Egyptian collections. And I always make a point to check out any Black art they are featuring. Beyond that, it is simply beautiful. Stroll around the Wade Lagoon and take a look inside.
Cleveland Public Library
Cleveland Public Library is another aesthetically pleasing experience in Cleveland. As much as it might surprise you, the Cleveland Public Library has a number of art pieces and not to mention beautiful architecture. I love the beauty that can be found in such an unexpected place. If you find yourself roaming around downtown, this unique experience will cost you nothing but time.
The Flats
This is where I go for a nice dinner on the water and nightlife. With clubs and bars throughout, I love spending time here in the summer. Come here if you want to get dressed up, eat, and have a good time.
Rockefeller Park/Cultural Gardens
Named after Cleveland’s own, John D. Rockefeller. Rockefeller Park has been deemed the largest park solely located within city limits. It’s a great place for running or cycling. If you don’t have time for that, at least drive through it. It’s very scenic and my favorite part is the Cultural Gardens. Monuments line miles of greenery to commemorate a number of ethnicities that have contributed to Cleveland as well as the country as a whole.
Karamu House
Many do not realize that in Playhouse Square, Cleveland has the largest theater district outside of New York City. Now that I have put our broader theater scene into perspective, let me shift your attention to Karamu House. Renowned in its own right, Karamu House is the country’s oldest African American theater. If possible, try to look up show dates and times in advance to experience this living history.
Edgewater Beach
Edgewater Beach is my favorite place to go to unwind in Cleveland, especially when I am not trying to spend money. You will often find me here on Sunday mornings for donation-based yoga. Schedule some time to unwind during your next trip. Whenever I bring people here they forget they’re in Cleveland…but I always remind them!
Why You Must Visit…
Or if you’re like me, act like a tourist in your own city. Cleveland is full of so many hidden gems. Like other major cities, fun is all around—you just may have to look a little harder to find it. The Land has such robust food and arts scenes that tend to be overshadowed by often misinformed opinions of the city. But some may say I’m biased—so come to Cleveland and form your own opinion!
