Another great night at the KeyBank State Theater with Mr. Grinch in town! Dr.Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical had its opening night on December 10th. Following the Cleveland Pops Jingle Bell Jamboree and the Christmas tree lighting downtown, the Christmas spirit is just getting started. Coming into the lobby, lots of Christmas lights greeted everyone, people packed into the theater (some wearing Grinch hats), and little kids stared at the giant Christmas tree. The crowd was really excited just from the atmosphere created.

A stage adaptation of Dr. Seuss’s well-known holiday classic, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, uses music, vibrant graphics, and live performances to bring the classic story of the grumpy green Grinch to life. The musical follows the Grinch as he tries to take Christmas away from the happy people of Whoville, only to learn that it’s about more than just gifts and decorations. To appeal to audiences of all ages, the production combines humor, catchy songs, and whimsical design while staying faithful to the core of the original story. The timeless message of kindness, community, and the true spirit of Christmas is preserved in this theatrical adaptation, which builds upon the classic tale.

From the moment the curtain rose, the audience was instantly transported to the realm of Whoville by the crazy and whimsical set design. Exaggerated shapes, vivid colors, and whimsical details filled the stage. It was like every Dr. Seuss book had come alive. It really set the musical in stone. Every time you looked at the characters, you were reminded that, as of this moment, we were not in Cleveland but in Whoville. The costumes were not only visually impressive but also faithful to the film. Audience members noted how well the designers executed the costumes, with some even suggesting that Dr. Seuss would be proud. It was very accurate to the movie.

One of the best parts of the show was Josh Woodie‘s portrayal of the Grinch. He frequently engaged with the audience during the performance, breaking the fourth wall in a way that particularly delighted younger viewers. The children’s enthusiastic responses increased the performance’s overall energy and created a more immersive and captivating experience. His vocals in “One of a Kind” were on point, and it earned him the loudest cheer from the audience. Woodie had a fantastic stage presence because he perfectly captured the Grinch’s cunning, sardonic humor, and slow emotional change. His performance was memorable and enjoyable from beginning to end because he related to both the character and the audience.

Overall, Dr. Seuss’s’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical was a fun and festive way to keep the holiday season going. The strong performances, vibrant visuals, and engaging atmosphere brought the classic story to life while preserving its heartfelt message. With its humor, charm, and holiday spirit, the production proved to be an enjoyable experience for audiences of all ages.
