I don’t like being trapped was the phrase I remember echoing throughout my head as my sister explained what a sensory deprivation tank was. Honestly, anything with the word deprivation in it was a turn-off to me. It only worsened when she said that I would be alone in a dark zero gravity tub inside water. How much water is in the tank? What if I get bored? What if I get locked inside? These were a few of the fears that I had going into this experience.

Being the overthinker that I tend to be, I did a bit more research and concluded that the pros outweigh the cons.

So, I began my journey to the True REST Float Spa in Rocky River, Ohio. When I entered, it was very brightly lit and clean. The staff greeted me and asked me to check in.

They allowed me to have a tour to see what the setup was like first. Each guest receives a private room with a shower to clean before and after your float. My tour guide explained that each pod has a 2-way intercom connecting you to the front desk if you need anything during your visit and, the tank door does not lock. You can even leave it cracked while you float. At that point, all my fears disappeared. The water contains 1,000lbs of Epsom salt that helps with joint pain and only 10 inches of water so, you will float quite easily.

After the tour, I watched an informative video about float sessions, and then I was ready to relax. Inside my private room, I had everything I needed to shower down to the flip flops, earplugs, and Vaseline bandage for any cuts. They also provided a floatation device for my head. The water temperature is 98 degrees. At first, I thought this would be a tad cold but, it was perfect and, I imagine it is the level of comfort babies experience in the womb.

I decided to leave the lights on and set them to change colors. The tank also looks more inviting than what I imagined in my head, almost like a tiny alien pod, an aesthetic I appreciated.

You can listen to your music or relax to True REST’s playlist. I found this helpful because I did not have a playlist prepared. Now that I have had this experience, I created a playlist for my next visit. Even while the tub was closed, I felt safe and meditated for a bit before dozing off.

At the end of my session, I treated myself to the oxygen bar and enjoyed complimentary hot tea.

My session was much needed as the area I live in can get pretty loud and I live with my family. I often don’t have access to complete moments of silent tranquility to just be.

So if you are on the fence about booking a floatation appointment, give it a try! Not only can it be a break for your mind and body it, but can be a re-charge for your spirit as well. I will go back soon.
