Mayor Bibb announced on Twitter today that applications for the City of Cleveland Black Women and Girls Commission is open. The commission was formed in response to the 2019 study by CityLab ranked Cleveland as the worst metropolitan city for Black Women in terms of livability.
In May, Cleveland City Council approved the formation of the committee. Council also set forth the requirements and demographic makeup for the committee. In order to fulfill the requirements, the committee is required to have a Black woman who represents the faith community, corporate Cleveland, social services, labor, preK-12 and higher education, local grassroots organizations, the Mayor’s office, and City Council. Additionally, there must be a Black woman MD from one of the local hospital systems, and a local college student. The commission will also include a subcommittee made up of Black girls and young women ages 8-20.
The application can be found here and on the city of Cleveland’s website. The deadline for application submissions is August 3rd.
