Jan. 15, 2024 marks the 37th annual observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Celebrated on the third Monday of January each year, the federal holiday honors the birthday of Dr. King, a Baptist minister and social rights activist renowned for his pivotal role in the civil rights movement.
The campaign to establish Dr. King’s birthday as a federal holiday, led by Congressman John Conyers, spanned 15 years– beginning merely days after his assassination in 1968– and garnered support from influential figures like King’s widow, Coretta Scott King, Stevie Wonder and the Congressional Black Caucus. After years of persistent efforts to pass the bill in Congress, it ultimately received approval and was signed into law in 1983. The first national observance of MLK Day took place on Jan. 20, 1986.
In 1994, the King Holiday and Service Act became law to honor Dr. King’s commitment to service and community improvement. The legislation aimed to motivate Americans to engage in volunteerism and give back to their communities. Recognized as the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service, MLK Day encourages individuals to view it not just as a day off from work and school but as an opportunity to commit themselves to community service, upholding Dr. King’s legacy of social justice and advocacy.
To honor Dr. King’s dedication to helping others, ServeOhio, Ohio’s Commission on Service and Volunteerism, has granted awards to 19 MLK Day of Service local projects, totaling more than $25,000. Each of these projects works to unite volunteers to continue Dr. King’s legacy of sustainable change and service. ServeOhio has awarded grant money to Adventure Crew in Cincinnati, the RISE Center in Columbus, Rural Action in Athens and several other Ohio service-oriented organizations dedicated to environmental protection, social justice, economic reform, community improvement and food security. There are several volunteer opportunities in the Greater Cleveland area that Clevelanders should consider this MLK Day of Service.
Those who want to enjoy the holiday through community-led celebrations can attend several events in Cleveland during the weekend of Jan. 12-15. The Cleveland Orchestra will be putting on a Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Concert on January 14 at Severance Hall. Tickets are free of charge but required for admission. The Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage will be hosting HEAR OUR VOICES: Annual MLK Day Celebration, free with registration, to commemorate the life of Dr. King and celebrate Jewish heritage on Jan. 15. The Cleveland Museum of Natural History will hold its Discovery Day on Jan. 15 and allow guests to connect with scientists and participate in hands-on activities. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame will also offer free admission on Jan. 15 to celebrate the holiday.
As the annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service approaches, individuals should follow Dr. King’s dedication to social justice and service and give back to others and their community. There will be several weekend-long volunteer opportunities and celebratory events in the Greater Cleveland area that Clevelanders should consider participating in. MLK Day is not just a day off but a day on for service, reflection and celebration of the values Dr. King advocated for throughout his life.
